The Guide to Small Business Gifts 2026: Thoughtful Gifts from Independent Makers

The Guide to Small Business Gifts 2026: Thoughtful Gifts from Independent Makers

Dare I ask if you've started your Christmas shopping yet?!

I know, I know, it comes around so fast.

You have a lot to buy for, and the lure of powering through that list at John Lewis or M&S is strong.

But before you do, hear me out!

As a certified shop small enthusiast, I'm often asked for advice on how to find the perfect gift and stay organised without resorting to a bulk Amazon order. Luckily for you, I've been shopping small for years now, so I've built up quite the database of places to find truly unique gifts that will hit the spot for everyone on your list.

I shop with (or lust after) all of the businesses in this guide, so I'd love to know if you buy from any of these owners and entrepreneurs.

(Please also share your favourite UK makers with me so we can all keep shopping with convenience AND a conscience!)

Now, it's time to get the kettle on, dig out your credit card, and shop to your heart’s content from the comfort of your living room.

1. Subscription box by Craftiosity – for the crafter

There's something so satisfying about making something with your own two hands, particularly when you can switch off from everything else for a few hours.

Craftiosity specialises in little craft kits that give you the chance to learn new skills and try something different - everything from embroidered wall art to botanical clay coasters (my personal favourite).

You can choose from a one-off gift or a monthly subscription for the gift that keeps on giving, and there are options for adults and children.

A lovely idea for someone who enjoys being creative but doesn't necessarily have the time to research projects, buy materials, and work out where to begin.

Check out Craftiosity.

2. Box of macaroons by Miss Macaroon – for the one with a sweet tooth

If you have someone in your life with a sweet tooth, my fellow Birmingham-based business, Miss Macaroon, has just the thing.

Founded by Michelin pastry chef Rosie Ginday MBE, the company creates colourful, handcrafted macaroons and madeleines that are almost too pretty to eat (I said almost).

And what could be better than the sweet taste of handmade macaroons, I hear you ask?

Well, knowing your sweet treat is having a positive impact, because Miss Macaroon is a social enterprise that supports young people facing barriers to employment, helping them develop skills and confidence through training and work opportunities.

Sounds like a delicious excuse to order a box for yourself while you're at it, don't you agree?

3. Hidden Realms by Rob McGuinness – for nature lovers and adventurers

This one is close to my heart because Rob McGuinness is a friend of mine, as well as a very talented photographer.

I have a copy of his book, Hidden Realms, and it really is gorgeous. I love to sit down with a cup of tea and leaf through it for a moment of calm, appreciating the beauty and detail of the natural world through someone else's eyes.

This would make a thoughtful Christmas gift for a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or someone who loves a gorgeous coffee table book to flick through.

And yes, I'm probably biased because I know Rob, but I wouldn't recommend it if I didn't think it was fantastic, I promise!

4. Paint by Numbers kit by DIY Art Club – for the aspiring artist

Now, this is on my own Christmas wish list and if I don't get it this year I'm going to be treating myself!

I've been eyeing up the Beauty in Glass paint-by-numbers kit from DIY Art Club for some time. I think it's such a clever idea for people who would love to create their own artwork but don't feel confident about their drawing or painting abilities (aka, me).

You get the pleasure of making something yourself without the pressure of starting with a blank canvas. Hopefully, at the end of it you have something lovely to display in your home.

Will this finally be the year I add painting to my list of creative pursuits? Watch this space...

5. Patterned Silver Oval Earrings by Kate Smith Jewellery - for the modern jewellery lover

Of course, if you wish to support my own small business this year, I have lots of beautiful pieces for you to choose from, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, eternity rings, and jewellery sets.

These contemporary hand-drilled, gently domed earrings from my Patterned Collection (KSJ fact: this was actually my first ever collection!) make a dreamy gift and go with absolutely everything.

They come in organic sterling silver or 9ct yellow gold and are a versatile addition to any modern jewellery lover's collection.

Buy the earrings.

6. Tote bag by Fair and True – for the accessory lover

I can recommend this from plenty of personal experience, because I've been toting my Fair and True bag around for about 18 months now and it has become my trusty way to transport everything I need from home to work on the train. It's still going strong, which says a lot about the quality.

What I particularly like is that you can mix and match the colours to create something that feels a little more individual. It's practical, well-made, and thoughtfully designed. All the things I look for when choosing something for myself or as a gift.

Ideal for someone who appreciates accessories they'll use every day to brighten up everyday life.

Buy the mix and match tote bag.

7. Cat calendar by Niaski – for the cat person in your life

Since Kenji came into our lives I've become rather fond of all things cat-related, so naturally, Niaski had to make an appearance on this list.

The brand combines two things that go together surprisingly well: cats and famous works of art.

Its playful, art-inspired designs are clever, characterful, and a bit quirky. Just the kind of thing that makes me smile.

I particularly like the calendars, which would make a brilliant gift for someone who loves cats, art, or preferably both. A little humour to brighten up the year ahead.

8. Lino print by Linolord – for lovers of original artwork

I have one of Linolord's prints framed in our new house and it's a piece I love looking at.

As someone who has attempted lino printing myself, I'm in awe of the skill involved. It's one of those crafts that can look deceptively simple until you try doing it yourself!

There's so much precision and artistic ability behind the finished work so I have enormous respect for people who have mastered the art.

If you're looking for a Christmas present for someone who appreciates art or interiors, I'd highly recommend taking a look. Artwork makes such a personal gift, particularly when you've chosen something that really reflects the recipient's taste.

9. Handmade wire flowers by Judith Brown – for someone who loves flowers and beautiful craftsmanship

I featured Judith Brown's beautiful wire flowers in a previous gift guide, but I couldn't resist including them again because I'm still waiting for someone to buy me one! (hint hint, husband!)

Judith creates intricate floral designs from wire, transforming a simple material into something delicate and rather beautiful. As a fellow maker, I have such an appreciation for the skill and patience involved in creating pieces like these.

They're a lovely alternative to fresh flowers, particularly for someone who appreciates handmade objects and would enjoy having something beautiful on display all year round.

And if anyone reading this happens to be wondering what to get me for Christmas... look no further.

10. A bespoke piece of jewellery by me – for a gift that's truly personal

One final one from me – for the person who deserves a one-of-a-kind gift.

Perhaps there's a family heirloom sitting half-forgotten in a drawer or a certain gemstone (like a birthstone or anniversary stone) that deserves to take centre-stage.

I would love to help you create a bespoke or remodelled piece of jewellery for someone who really deserves a special treat. You don't need to know exactly what you want, just book a free consultation with me (online or in-person at my Birmingham studio) and we'll put our heads together to come up with something spectacular.

Of course, creating bespoke jewellery takes time, so get in touch as early as possible.

A little reminder to shop small this Christmas

I can always feel the time that's gone into choosing the perfect gift when I receive one - and I take a lot of joy from shopping mindfully amid the craziness of the festive period.

And as an independent business owner myself, I can attest to the sheer excitement we (still!) feel when you choose to place an order with us. It really does make a huge difference.

I hope these gift ideas have inspired you to treat a loved one to something a bit different this year.

Please do let me know if you choose anything from my list, and if a little piece of Kate Smith Jewellery happens to find its way under someone's Christmas tree, I'd love to see a picture of its new owner enjoying it - I love receiving your pics on Instagram or email. It makes my day.

Happy Christmas, and happy shopping!
