Sometimes it’s gradual, sometimes it happens practically overnight. Your favourite ring doesn't go past your knuckle, only just squeezes on, or slips off throughout your day.
Whether it’s due to arthritis, hormonal changes, or the simple fact that our bodies evolve over time, changes in finger size are incredibly common, especially for us women in midlife and beyond.
It's a topic that comes up a lot in my jewellery consultations, but I rarely see people talking about it online as part of the discussion around ageing.
Perhaps it’s because jewellery isn’t considered “essential” in the practical sense - the obvious answer is to just take it off.
But it’s not that simple, is it?
For many of us (myself included), jewellery is woven into daily life
We feel incomplete without our favourite pieces. Jewellery forms part of how we see ourselves and how we want others to see us.
And as we get older, that sense of identity often feels more important than ever. Our roles shift, our bodies change, and we grab onto the things that make us feel like ourselves for dear life.
That’s why letting go of a beloved piece - even temporarily - can feel surprisingly emotional.
So yes, jewellery isn't technically essential. But it's so important.
Why our rings might stop fitting
Our hands change over time for all sorts of reasons:
-
Arthritic joint swelling
-
Hormonal shifts (including menopause)
-
Weight fluctuations
-
Water retention
-
Changes in circulation
-
Natural thickening of knuckles with age.
Arthritis in particular can cause the joint itself to enlarge, even if the base of the finger hasn’t changed significantly. This can make it difficult for rings to pass over the knuckle comfortably.
What to do if your rings feel too tight
If a ring feels tight or uncomfortable, avoid forcing it on or off, as this can cause damage to both your finger and the ring.
Remove rings at the first sign of swelling, or try putting them on first thing in the morning when swelling is often reduced.
However, if none of that is working anymore, it may be time to think about a ring resizing service.
Telltale signs it's time for ring resizing
Your rings should fit comfortably, without feeling too tight or loose.
However, our finger size naturally fluctuates, so it's not always immediately obvious when it's time to consider ring resizing.
Temporary swelling (due to heat, travel, or even salty food) is normal, but finger size can change over the years on a more permanent basis for the reasons mentioned.
If your ring still doesn't fit after several weeks or months, it may be time for some adjustments.
Here are the signs it’s time to consider a ring resize.
1. It regularly feels tight or uncomfortable
If your ring leaves deep indentations in your finger, feels difficult to remove, causes discomfort, or makes your finger feel restricted, it’s become too small.
Your rings should slide over the knuckle with gentle resistance and sit comfortably at the base of the finger without any squeezing.
2. You struggle to get it over your knuckle
For many women, particularly with arthritic changes, the knuckle becomes slightly larger than the base of the finger.
If your ring fits once it’s on but getting it over the knuckle is an ordeal, resizing - or exploring alternative options, like hinged/adjustable rings - will help.
3. It spins constantly
Perhaps you have the opposite problem and your ring is too loose now. It might be spinning around your finger or slipping off, causing concerns about losing it.
Constant spinning can also cause gemstone settings like diamonds or sapphires to wear unevenly over time, so it's wise to address it before it worsens.
4. You’ve stopped wearing it altogether because it's the wrong size
The biggest sign of all is when you've stopped reaching for your ring altogether because it's just too uncomfortable.
When your favourite piece is relegated to the back of a drawer, it's time to consult a jeweller about bringing it back to life.
How ring resizing works
Ring resizing is a careful, skilled process.
For solid gold (including white gold and rose gold) and silver rings, a jeweller will usually make a ring larger by cutting the band and adding a small piece of matching precious metal.
Or, we can make it smaller by removing a tiny section of the band and seamlessly soldering it back together.
The ring is then carefully reshaped, polished, and finished so the alteration is invisible and the piece is restored to its former glory.
At Kate Smith Jewellery, we work in solid precious metals rather than PVD plated materials, so the ring resizing process is often very achievable while preserving the integrity of the piece. Please note, we’re only able to resize rings originally created by us.
Alternative options to resizing
Although many rings can be resized, some designs (like full eternity bands or rings with very intricate settings) may require a different approach.
If you enquire about resizing and your piece isn't suitable, we'll talk you through other options, for example:
Ring remodelling service
Remodelling is a beautiful way to honour the sentiment of a piece while making it the perfect fit for you today.
We can incorporate one or more rings into the remodelling process, and other pieces of jewellery too. Some customers choose remodelling due to changes in finger size, while others crave a fresh look that retains the meaning.

Other ways to transform your ring
If your ring isn't suitable for resizing or you're concerned about future changes to your finger size as you get older, we can talk through other ways to transform your precious piece.
For example, we could convert your ring into a necklace or use the precious metal and gemstones to make a stunning pair of earrings.
Much easier to wear and not restricted by those pesky joints!
How much does it cost to resize a ring?
If you're keen to explore ring resizing, you may well be curious about the cost. There's no set price for this service, as it depends on the individual piece and the work required.
Helpful tips for jewellery and changing bodies
1. Consider wider bands carefully
As fingers change shape, very wide bands can feel much tighter than slimmer ones, even at the same ring size. If comfort is becoming an issue, a slightly narrower or gently rounded band like the Dune Slim Silver Ring can feel easier to wear.
2. Opt for comfort fit designs

Rings with a softly curved inner edge (sometimes called “comfort fit”) slide over the knuckle more smoothly and feel less restrictive throughout the day.
All of the rings in our Dune Collection are comfort fit, like the Mid Silver Dune Ring shown above.
3. Think about ring placement
Some fingers swell more than others. If a sentimental ring no longer works on its original finger, it might sit more comfortably on another, even your opposite hand. Don't worry about tradition or convention - comfort comes first.
4. Seasonal swelling is normal
Hands naturally swell in warmer weather and shrink slightly in colder months. If your ring only feels tight in summer, resizing may not be necessary. If you're unsure, book a consultation and we'll figure it out together.
5. Keep your rings in peak condition
As joints change shape, rings can twist or sit differently, which may affect stone settings over time. A periodic professional clean and check ensures claws and settings remain secure.
